Causes of Sore Throat
A sore throat can be caused by a direct or an indirect inflammation.  Direct involvement of the pharyngeal tissue can occur from a virus or bacteria while an indirect inflammation can be the result of a sinus infection and post nasal drip.  Each of these have a characteristic presentation which your physician makes note of when examining the throat.  This information is coupled with temperature, pulse, respiration rate and whether there are enlarged lymph nodes present in order to make a diagnosis.

After gathering all of this information, your doctor may want to rule out Beta-hemolytic strep by performing a rapid test or doing a culture.  Viral inflammation is generally not cultured because it is less severe and easy to diagnose.
