The Obermeyer Test - Bowel Toxemia Assessment Now Being Offered
The Obermeyer Test was initially developed to help in assessing bowel obstruction, but is used primarily to assess the level of toxemia present in non-obstructed patients.  With toxemia, there is an increase in substances such as skatol, indole, and phenol which are by-products of protein digestion by abnormal bowel flora.  These are absorbed and excreted in the urine in detectable levels.  Detection of high levels means that the patient's bowel function has slowed or that they are consuming a protein source that is not blood type compatible and thus not readily absorbed.  Therefore, the protein remains in the bowel and is broken down by bacteria that normally do not flourish when the intestinal flora is balanced.  This is experienced as symptoms of gas and bloating, constipation and/or diarrhea, and a sluggish or toxic feeling.

The Obermeyer Test is now being performed at the clinic and requires a first morning urine sample.  The cost of the test is $10.00 and additional information can be obtained from your physician.
