- In addition to being the organ of
hearing, the inner ear also houses the semi-circular canals which are
involved with balance. With an inflammation of the ear, the
semi-circular canals may also be affected resulting in a feeling of
dizziness.
- As a person ages, the tiny hairs that
reproduce sounds transmitted from the ear drum begin to deteriorate
resulting in some hearing loss. This is especially true for sounds
in the higher ranges.
- Because the cells lining the ear canal
are very thin, the ear canal secretes a thin waxy substance to remove
dirt, bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Normally this does not
accumulate and does not need to be cleaned out with a Q-tip.
